Bottled Water and Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution is so widespread that it’s threatening life on earth especially for animals, and potentially, even humans.  In fact, ocean plastic is killing thousands of marine creatures each year either after ingesting or finding themselves entangled with it.

Fast facts about plastic pollution

  • Around 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year
  • Plastics/microplastics can now be found in deep ocean trenches, the sea breeze, and even in the food we eat and the water we drink!
  • 90% of seabirds have plastic in their guts
  • 10,000 metric tons of plastic end up in North America’s Great Lakes every year
  • In Canada, only 11% of plastic gets recycled

This brings us to one of the most common plastic pollutants that we have today – plastic beverage bottles. In a report published by the National Geographic, a staggering 1 million plastic bottles are sold globally every single minute.  Plastic bottles and bottle caps rank as the third and fourth most collected plastic trash items in the Ocean Conservancy’s annual September beach cleanups in more than 100 countries. And with more consumers increasingly opting for bottled water, believing it’s healthier than other bottled beverages such as soft drinks, a huge proportion of all these plastic trash are surely from bottled water.

But plastic pollution isn’t the only unfortunate consequence of our obsession with bottled water. Producing bottled water requires up to 2,000 times more energy used to produce tap water. More than 17 million barrels of oil are required to produce enough water bottles to meet the annual demand for bottled water in America alone! This much use of fossil fuels contributes, in turn, to global warming.

What can you do?

When it comes to battling pollution, the first thing that we should keep in mind is conscious consumption. What we choose to buy can greatly impact our waste and its effect on our environment.

While recycling plastic bottles can help minimize plastic waste, there is a better solution to cut down on your plastic use for the long term – a water filter!

Having a water filtration system at home diminishes the need to constantly buy bottled water. With a water filtration system, you can enjoy safe and clean filtered water straight from the tap whenever you need it.

Invest in an efficient water filter system like IVO! It has an advanced 4-stage filtration system that features the unique hollow fiber membrane – the same technology used in dialyzers and artificial kidneys in the medical field! This medical-grade filtration technology removes microorganisms and microscopic impurities as little as 0.1 micron – including bacteria, microplastics, and even sub-microplastics!

Furthermore, 1 IVO cartridge lasts up to 1,500 liters, replacing up to 3,000 500ml of plastic water bottles!

Get your IVO Water Purifier here.

IVO's advanced hollow fiber membrane technology has passed NSF/ANSI/CAN 42 standards and is fully NSF-certified. Filters have been tested according to Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) S3201.

IVO is manufactured by Toray Industries, makers of Torayvino, the number 1 faucet-mounted water purifier in Japan.
